Richard Dee
Carter was born in Elwood, Indiana on
April 21, 1934 to Robert and Cleva
Hackett Carter. He graduated from Purdue
University and taught math in the
Harlandale district in San Antonio. |

Dee was a voracious reader
and prolific poet, and was
active in Alamo Area Poets
of Texas. Dee was an active
member and past president of
the South Texas chapter of
Mensa. He was a rated chess
player, coached chess to
kids, and also enjoyed
duplicate bridge with Fiesta
Bridge Club. |

He is survived by his wife,
Nancy Sigler Carter,
daughters Sarah (Scott)
VanBeck of Houston and
Suzanne Carter of San
Antonio, four grandchildren,
his former wife JoGayle
Chamberlain Carter, brother
Jared (Diane) Carter of
Indianapolis, sisters Misch
(John) Ertel of Boynton
Beach, Florida and Candace
Carter (Tutilo Karcher) of
Karlsruhe, Germany, and four
nieces and nephews. In lieu
of flowers, the family
requests donations to SAY Sí,
an arts program for San
Antonio students grades 6-12
