Understanding the Laws of Duplicate Bridge

Beginner‑Friendly Summary

The Laws of Duplicate Bridge exist to keep the game fair, consistent, and enjoyable. They explain what happens when something unusual occurs at the table. Here’s the friendly version:

  • 1. Deals must be fair. Everyone gets 13 cards. If something goes wrong, the director fixes it.
  • 2. Bidding must be clear. Use bidding boxes or electronic devices so everyone sees the same information.
  • 3. No unauthorized information. Decisions must be based only on the bidding and play — not hesitations or gestures.
  • 4. Full disclosure. Opponents have the right to know your partnership agreements.
  • 5. Irregularities happen. The director restores fairness, not punishment.
  • 6. Dummy has limited rights. Dummy places cards but cannot advise or comment.
  • 7. Declarer controls the play. Declarer chooses cards from both hands.
  • 8. Tricks must stay in order. Once turned down, tricks can’t be inspected unless allowed.
  • 9. Scoring is based on contract, tricks, and vulnerability.
  • 10. The director’s job is fairness. They help everyone enjoy the game.
